We are looking for a Portfolio Performance Trainee to provide support to the performance team within the Middle and Back Office division. The selected candidate, who will report to the Head of Middle and Back Office, will contribute to the analysis of the performance and the reporting of investment activities.


Among other liquidity portfolios, the ESM manages, prudently and conservatively, €80.5 billion of capital paid in by the euro area member states. Performance analysis reflects the evolution of the value of this portfolio against strategic and tactical benchmarks.


The European Stability Mechanism (“ESM”) is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for euro area countries. It provides financial assistance to Members facing financing difficulties. European leaders have agreed to an expanded mandate for the ESM, which it will implement in the years ahead. The ESM will have a stronger role in the analysis of financial stability risks and design of policy measures in programmes, jointly with the European Commission; it will provide the Single Resolution Board with a financial backstop to support effective and orderly resolution of banks. In the context of the current Covid-19 crisis, the ESM has established a precautionary credit line as one important element in the joint European response to the pandemic.

To provide value-added assistance as part of the performance team within the Middle and Back Office division, with a particular focus on supporting the following tasks:

Investment analysis and reporting

  • Report on investment activity and performance to internal stakeholders (Head of department, Front Office, Risk, Management Board).
  • Support the reporting and presentation of investment activity and performance to relevant committees.
  • Perform data quality checks on data feeds for portfolio analytics tool.
  • Develop and maintain processes, procedures, and tools for investment analysis.
  • Maintain and enhance relevant information technology systems, data feeds, and databases.

Investment portfolio benchmarking

  • Support the maintenance of the benchmarking framework for the ESM’s investment portfolios.
  • Ensure that the necessary processes, procedures, methodologies, support and control systems are up to date and effective.
  • Calculate benchmark positions at rebalance.
  • Input new benchmark composition into the financial system.
  • Monitor and report on portfolio’s relative performance against benchmarks (tactical and strategic).

Projects and initiatives

  • Provide support on projects and other initiatives, including the implementation of new instruments, tools, and systems, as needed.



  • University degree in a field relevant for the role, ideally to Masters level or working towards completion of a Master’s degree.
  • A first experience/traineeship in portfolio performance measurement, preferably focused on fixed income assets, is considered an asset.
  • Good understanding of financial products with an emphasis on fixed income would be an asset
  • Knowledge of Bloomberg would be an advantage.
  • Good knowledge of information technology systems, particularly MS Excel.
  • VBA programing skills would be an advantage.
  • Fluency in English, both oral and written.
